Vida Bonsai Kadarka 2023 is an exceptional old-vine Kadarka from Szekszárd, Hungary, produced from approximately 100-year-old vines. Delicate rather than powerful, it combines red berry fruit, lively acidity and the playful spiciness characteristic of Kadarka – a refined expression of one of Hungary’s historic indigenous red grape varieties. Grape Variety: 100% Kadarka Country: Hungary Region: Szekszárd Appellation: Szekszárd PDO Vintage: 2023 Wine Type: Dry red wine Alcohol: 12.5% vol. Vine Age: Approx. 100 years Harvest: Hand-harvested with manual bunch selection Fermentation: 10 days at 25°C Ageing: 25 months in stainless steel Serving Temperature: 15–17°C Award: James Suckling – 95 Points Charming, complex and beautifully light-footed, Bonsai Kadarka offers expressive red berry fruit, fresh acidity and playful spicy notes. Its fine structure and restrained 12.5% alcohol emphasise elegance rather than power, while the fruit from the century-old vines gives the wine depth and personality. The name “Bonsai” has a unique story. While Péter Vida Sr. was showing the winery to a Japanese partner, his guest noticed the tiny, ancient vines and immediately exclaimed “Bonsai!” Their small, sculptural appearance reminded him of the Japanese trees, traditionally associated with wisdom, longevity and good fortune. The grapes from these approximately 100-year-old vines are harvested by hand and manually selected, followed by a 10-day fermentation at 25°C and 25 months of maturation in stainless steel. With no oak influence, the focus remains firmly on the purity, spice and delicate character of the old-vine Kadarka.
