Valbusenda Cepas Viejas Tinta de Toro 2012 is a premium old-vine red wine from D.O. Toro, Spain, produced from 80-year-old ungrafted Tinta de Toro vines. Low-yielding old vines, sandy soils with ancient river pebbles and extended French oak ageing create a concentrated, complex and remarkably silky expression of Toro. Grape Variety: 100% Tinta de Toro Country: Spain Region: Toro, Castilla y León Appellation: D.O. Toro Vintage: 2012 Vine Age: Approx. 80 years Vines: Ungrafted Soil: Sandy soils with ancient river pebbles Wine Type: Dry red wine Alcohol: 13.5% vol. Ageing: 20 months in new, medium-toasted French oak barriques Serving Temperature: 14–16°C Awards: Mundus Vini – Gold Medal; International Wine Challenge – Silver Medal; Repsol Guide – 93 Points Deep garnet with violet reflections, Cepas Viejas reveals balsamic and inky aromas surrounding the fresh varietal character of Tinta de Toro. On the palate, it is round, balanced and silky, with layers of dark fruit, aromatic herbs and cocoa. Concentration and structure are beautifully integrated, leading to a long and persistent finish. The wine comes from exceptional 80-year-old ungrafted vines planted in sandy soils containing ancient river pebbles. Alcoholic fermentation takes place at a controlled 28°C with 24 days of skin contact in 1,200-litre French oak vats. Malolactic fermentation follows for two months in new 225-litre French oak barrels, before the wine matures for 20 months in new, medium-toasted French barriques. This meticulous vinification and the concentration of the old vines result in a powerful yet refined expression of Tinta de Toro with impressive ageing potential.
